As the 2024 cross country season comes to a close, it’s a fitting time to reflect on what has been an extraordinary journey for our team. Cross country has long been a proving ground for some of Ireland’s most accomplished athletes. Icons such as David Gillick, Derval O’Rourke, Rhasidat Adeleke, Rob Heffernan and Sharlene Mawdsley began their athletic journeys in the mud and hills of cross country racing, sharpening their skills and building resilience that would serve them on the national and international stages. This season, our team has upheld that proud tradition, showcasing the power of collective effort and individual determination.

The hallmark of cross country is its emphasis on team spirit, and this year, our group has truly flourished together. The camaraderie and mutual support within the squad have been inspiring to witness. Each training session, every cheer on the sidelines, and every finish-line embrace highlighted what makes cross country unique: we train as a squad, race as a team, and compete as individuals, but we succeed together.

This season, we achieved something truly special: three National silver medals in club team competitions. National medals are never easily won, and in cross country, where every place and second matters, they are a testament to the depth, determination, and unity of our squad. These achievements are not just about those who crossed the finish line but also about the collective effort behind them—parents driving to early morning races, coaches fine-tuning training plans, mentors offering guidance, teammates pushing each other to improve, and friends providing encouragement.

Cross country is more than a sport; it’s a community effort. It’s about showing up for each other, embracing the challenge, and striving to be the best versions of ourselves—both on and off the course. As a team, we have grown in strength and spirit, and the bonds we’ve built this season will endure well beyond any race result.

As head coach, I am incredibly proud of what we have achieved together this year. The silver medals are tangible rewards for the hard work and dedication we’ve put in, but the true success lies in the journey—the effort, the growth, and the memories we’ve created along the way. U11 Girls, remember this, in 2021 that silver medal U15 team were 13th team, the same as you this year. They have worked together and now smile with silver medals around their necks. Keep going, keep trying, keep running and the success will come.

Thank you to everyone who has been part of this season. Your commitment, energy, and passion are what make this team extraordinary. Here’s to continuing to build on this foundation and striving for even greater heights in the seasons to come. Together, we are unstoppable!!
